Our DFM Process for Custom Aluminum, Magnesium and Zinc Die Casting Parts

Sep -29 -2026
From Customer Drawings to Manufacturable Parts

We are a China-based manufacturer specializing in custom aluminum, magnesium and zinc die casting parts made to customer drawings. Our main customers are located in Europe and North America, where requirements for dimensional accuracy, functional performance, surface quality and production consistency are often demanding.

For us, manufacturing from customer drawings is more than simply following the dimensions on a drawing. Before tooling and production begin, we need to understand whether the part can be manufactured reliably and economically.

This is why Design for Manufacturing (DFM) is an important part of our engineering process.

Our DFM Process Starts with the Customer Drawing

When we receive a new customer drawing, we do not immediately move to tooling or finalize a quotation.

Our engineering team first conducts a preliminary DFM review.

At this stage, we evaluate the overall part structure, material, casting process, dimensional requirements, machining requirements and potential manufacturing risks.

The preliminary DFM helps us determine:

* Whether the part is suitable for the proposed die casting process
* Whether the design can be manufactured reliably
* Whether special tooling or machining may be required
* Whether critical dimensions and tolerances are practical
* Whether there are potential quality or production risks

Based on this preliminary technical assessment, we then prepare a more accurate quotation.

This means that our quotation is based not only on material and tooling costs, but also on the actual manufacturing requirements of the part.

Detailed DFM After Order Confirmation

Once the customer accepts our quotation and the project moves forward, we conduct a detailed DFM review.

At this stage, our engineers go deeper into the manufacturing details, including:

* Wall thickness
* Draft angles
* Fillets and corner design
* Ribs and bosses
* Undercuts and sliders
* Parting line
* Gating and venting concepts
* Machining allowance and machining accessibility
* Critical dimensions and tolerances
* Potential casting and production risks

The detailed DFM provides the technical basis for die design, process planning, trial production and subsequent quality control.

If we identify a potential problem, we communicate it with the customer and discuss a practical solution before tooling and mass production.

Why DFM Matters to Our Customers

We believe the most important value of DFM is early risk identification.

A design issue discovered before tooling is much easier to address than the same issue discovered after the die has been manufactured or during mass production.

Our DFM process helps customers:

* Reduce the risk of tooling modifications
* Avoid unnecessary development delays
* Improve part manufacturability
* Establish more stable mass-production processes
* Better understand manufacturing-related costs and requirements

In short, our goal is to make sure that the customer's design is not only functional on paper, but also practical and reliable to manufacture in production.

DFM as Part of Our APQP Process

DFM is not an isolated engineering activity at our company. It is integrated into our APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) process as a key step in new product development.

Our typical development flow is:

Customer Drawing
↓
Preliminary DFM
↓
Quotation
↓
Customer Confirmation
↓
Detailed DFM & Process Planning
↓
Tooling & Trial Production
↓
FAI / PPAP
↓
Mass Production

By integrating DFM into APQP, we connect product design, manufacturing engineering and quality planning from the beginning of the project.

This allows us to identify and control manufacturing risks before they become production problems.

From Drawing to Finished Part

As a build-to-print die casting manufacturer, our role is not simply to manufacture what is shown on a drawing.

We provide technical input during the early stage of the project to help turn customer designs into manufacturable, stable and production-ready components.

Our approach connects:

Customer Drawing → DFM → Tooling → Die Casting → CNC Machining → Inspection → Finished Part

For us, DFM is one of the key steps in turning a customer drawing into a reliable finished component.
